Linux – Compress tar file

To create a compressed file of a directory you can use the tar command as follows:

$ tar -cvf <output name> <file to tar>

Flags

-c

Create file

-x

Extract or restore file

-v

Output the name of each file

-f

Use the tarfile argument as the name of the tar file.
